Driving in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria most motorists drive on the right hand side of the road. Drivers must be aware as road conditions are very changeable and not as good as some other European countries, speeding and overtaking are common practices amongst locals. Please be patient when you find yourself behind a family of 5 travelling to the seaside in their lada. Just remember the minimum driving age is 18 years and passengers must wear their safety belts.

All distances are measured in kilometres and roads are well signposted between major locations.  Speed limits are as follows: 50 kmh in built-up areas, 80 kph outside built-up areas, and 120 kph on motorways.  You will find most radar traps on long straights, exiting tunnels and on the out skirts of towns. Police are empowered to collect fines on the spot, and will investigate quite thoroughly attempting too discover any faults. Always ask for a receipt as this discourages fraudulent activities.
